Hello, and thanks for reading! We had an interesting week on the work front. It started with my business partner, Jeremiah Grossman's, report that refuted the "time to exploitation" graph on the Zerodayclock.com, and within 24 hours, that graph in particular was "retired". Of course, we will never know exactly why it was removed, but the author's stated reason was that getting good metrics was hard. Well, yes, especially when you are measuring uncorrelated data points. Oh well. Good riddance!

The problem is that the damage is done, and the false narrative is now part of the groupthink in information security and beyond. We still see the vast number of people who are still saying that the adversaries are speeding up, that they will find and exploit 0-days in seconds, etc, all of which have extremely weak statistical evidence to back up the claims, and at best, I can find exactly one example of where it did help in a ransomware case that presumably led to a loss. Though, to be fair, that Unit42 reported case did not use an 0-day, or even chained exploits. It just used off-the-shelf CVEs. What will happen in the future is anyone's guess, but my feeling is that there is nowhere to go from zero evidence but up. But I'm not exactly freaked out about one data point that doesn't even corroborate the narrative.

And yes, I know I've been pushing these a bit later, as I usually do them on Saturdays, but... You know, guys... this dude right here has a life. 😉 That said, I appreciate the friendly pokes. Here's the one I got this week:

In Russia/Ukraine News, Ukrainian strikes hit warehouses in Russia's Rostov region overnight. The targets included DNS and Ozon facilities that caught fire. Russian forces struck a logistics warehouse in Dnipropetrovsk. So that appears to be a sustained attack against logistics supply closer to the front. While I think these do raise a lot of eyebrows amongst the local population, I am not as convinced that they are having a meaningful impact on the war machine for some reason. It seems like it would, but I think there are just so many different ways that the front is currently getting supplies; it just hasn't made the dent that it could. There is also rumors that Norsi and Ust-Luga were also hit. Open Source Intel

Drones hit the Ryazan refinery again. Once more, because this thing seems to get hit a lot, and likely because they really need it to run, they will keep repairing it over and over again. Those repairs are suspect through, because once you damage this equipment with fire it is no longer rated for the same pressures it was originally. C4H10FO2P ☠️

Additional strikes in Sochi caused losses to Russian helicopters. I wasn't aware that Russia was utilizing Sochi, but if you recall this was where Russia did one of the olympics, and because it is a coastal town, they appear to be using it for coastal defense, which does make sense. Inserted media

In an unusual situation, the icebreaker Admiral Makarov caught fire while undergoing repairs in Kronstadt. It's not clear how this happened, but I don't think it's crazy to think this may have been another attack. SAW

Fuel shortages persist in multiple regions, with queues at gas stations now seeming to be a permanent feature of life in Russia. There are some of these queues that can last for days. I don't see how this gets solved in the current situation, and therefore the economy is severely at risk. Meanwhile the situation at the pumps are pretty awful, and here are a couple of videos of women who are very upset by the situation. Inserted media

A local ceasefire near the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant allows repairs to a power transmission line. The plant has lacked external power since August 20 and runs on diesel generators whose reserves are nearly exhausted. Oof. 👎 BLYSKAVKA

Russian forces recorded net territorial gains of approximately 133 square kilometers in August. The monthly advances continue to increase at a slow pace and remain far below the levels seen last year. This is why I am not convinced the attacks against supply chains are having the effect that the Ukrainians hoped they would. Any gains at all should be impossible without logistics, and yet, there we are. Not that this is anything to brag about, but unless there is some compounding collapse, this is not a good sign for Ukraine. Collapses could be economic, supply-related, manpower related, new weaponry, or weather-related as we go into fall and then winter. So I'm not saying that Russia will win, but we've gotta see some changes if we're going to have a measurable effect. Black Bird Group

Ukrainian drones have constrained Russian logistics across the Oskil River near Kupiansk, which is a good example of how logistics are hurting Russia. For instance, there were no confirmed territorial gains by Russian forces reported in the area. So perhaps Ukraine's attacks just haven't saturated enough of the supply lines in enough areas yet. Putin continues to reject any compromise peace deal and instead seek an agreement aligned with their stated objectives, which have not been made public. Kremlin sources say Moscow’s demands have grown more aggressive because Russian leaders believe the battlefield situation favors them. Russia has its own elections coming up in late September, so it makes sense that Putin would start talking about the fact that he has no intention of mobilizing, because that would likely be very unpopular. It also makes sense why the fuel export ban only lasts until late September. I think we'll see a lot of change in October, but not necessarily in a good way. Military Summary

Global waterborne diesel exports fell to 175.7 million barrels in August, down 47 million from a year earlier. Ukrainian drone strikes knocked out 3 million barrels of Russian refining capacity. Russia’s August shipments dropped to 504,600 tons. The Strait of Hormuz disruption removed another 2 to 3 million barrels a day of diesel from the market. The United States filled the gap with refinery utilization at 98 percent and diesel exports reaching a record 54.2 million barrels. But this shortage appears to be mostly diesel-related, according to the summary.

That said, oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz have returned to 55 percent of pre-war levels. That is not good news for Russia, because that was one of the areas where they could theoretically fund their war effort, being one of the few net exporters of oil. But middle eastern countries can ship more freely, that will greatly limit the upside for Russia. Jay in Kyiv

The Russian central bank created one trillion rubles in a single day to finance government bond purchases. That is about 11 billion USD. All of the money was then loaned out, so those interest payments are going to be enormous unless the government prints their way out of those as well. Commercial banks bought a record OFZ issuance as military spending reached its highest share of GDP since 1989. Military spending as a percentage of GDP is at its highest level since 1989. The Duma has been warning for some time that the economy is already teetering. This is hugely inflationary, not that it's happening, because that's bad enough, but that it's per day! There is up to a quadrillion rubles planned, which is 11 trillion USD. 💰💰 That will drive prices to the moon compared to wages and will price everyone out of anything that the state doesn't own and artificially constrain prices for. The Ukrainian jet interceptor Alexa Spatium has entered service with the armed forces. The interceptor uses direct collision to destroy Geran-3/4/5 drones without a warhead or proximity fuse. It is a pretty slick-looking interceptor that uses kinetic kill, which means it really needs to be traveling at high speed compared to its target, or hit weak areas. Most aircraft, especially drones, have no armor, so that may not be very difficult. Inserted media

The Ukrainian articulated unmanned ground vehicle SlimAk from HAZAKK uses a hinge-jointed frame to maintain wheel contact on uneven terrain. The articulated joint requires high-quality materials and makes the design more complex, but it does seem like it might be able to handle extremely complex terrain so that could be useful. 🪖MilitaryNewsUA🇺🇦

Ukraine has introduced the MAGURA V11 drone boat that measures 12 meters, weighs 2,200 kilograms, can remain at sea for seven days, and carries 18 Sting interceptors that launch directly from its deck. The idea is that Russian drones crossing the Black Sea will encounter air defense that was not previously mapped. Inserted media

In Kharkiv region authorities have installed anti-drone protection around gas stations that look like just sheets of plastic. This doesn't seem like it would work at all to me, unless the drone is extremely small and extremely lightweight and extremely slow flying and doesn't have a pressure fuze. Because otherwise this looks like security theatre to me. Inserted media

Kazakhstan is set to impose a six-month ban on wheat imports from Russia in any form to shield its domestic market from oversupply caused by the closure of the Black Sea and the Azov Sea. The measure will also close Kazakhstan as a transit route for Russian wheat. That's an economic blow to Russia and can end up driving global wheat prices as well, since Russian wheat won't have a way to get to market. That said, I suspect there may be a lot of starving Russians soon who will be happy for the wheat if that's all they can afford and all that's available. Stanimir Dobrev

In other bad news for Russia, their printing houses have reported a severe crisis as publishers move operations to China. It's not clear why they would prefer to print in China, but it may have to do with the supply chain and/or warehouses being targeted and/or the fuel crisis making it impossible to deliver the products. Either way, that's going to mean layoffs for that industry in Russia. SAW

In European News, the British Army has been ordered to halt training after the Ministry of Defence ran out of funds. War games and drills involving tanks, gunships, and at least ninety troops were canceled immediately, including a six-week exercise planned for Wales next week. Meanwhile, hundreds of masked protesters blocked roads near the Port of Dover this week. The demonstrators halted traffic to and from the ferry terminal while chanting against migrant crossings. The right-wing group Patriot Platform claimed responsibility for the protest.

Velos Rotors unveiled a tandem-rotor unmanned aerial system called the V-TWIN. The platform features a patented twin transmission design that isolates failed components without adding drag. The system is intended to keep the aircraft airborne after loss of a motor, ESC, belt, gear, bearing, main battery, or servo. It does feel like it could lift a fairly hefty payload. In the video it seemed to be able to life a pelican case, but it's not clear how heavy that was. Inserted media

In Southeast Asia News, Tesla announced that it built a production electric vehicle motor that contains none of the rare earth elements that China refines for 90 percent of the global supply. The Cybercab drive unit uses no neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium, or terbium, yet matches the full range. The 163-kilowatt unit is 18 percent smaller and 25 percent lighter than comparable motors, and the company says it can be assembled in less than ten seconds. Other Tesla models and most wind turbines, robots, and defense systems still require the magnets, so the change affects only a small share of current demand. That will likely be looked at very closely by a number of car manufacturers and engine designers of all types. Elon has been pretty open with his patents, as long as people don't sue him for infringing on theirs - a de facto IP sharing agreement he has had for years. But this is exactly the kind of innovation we need to diversify ourselves away from China's stranglehold. UnveiledChina

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that Iran has roughly 30 million barrels of crude oil remaining that China has not already purchased. Once that stockpile is gone, China will have no more Iranian oil to buy because Iran will have none left to sell. That could mean that China will have to start cutting its own usage. To what level, though, it's not quite clear. They have shown at least some resilience to supply shortages of fuel, but for how long they can sustain that and at what economic cost, it's not yet clear. That said, China may not want to find out and they may pressure the IRGC to come to the table. Raylan Givens

China demonstrated a remotely controlled version of the Lynx CS/VP16B 6x6 vehicle at a test range. The same chassis carried a remote weapon station with guided missiles, a 120 mm mortar, a 107 mm multiple rocket launcher, cargo modules, and reconnaissance equipment, and some variants were shown firing live ammunition. The 1.2-ton vehicle can transport about 1.1 tonnes of payload, allowing it to act as an unmanned resupply or fire-support platform without exposing personnel. I could see this gun being replaced by a mortar or an anti-drone grenade to act as close-in air support. Drone Wars

In Africa, the Sudanese Armed Forces are accused of converting aid chlorine into chemical munitions for airstrikes. Sudanese Armed Forces prepared chemical weapons munitions after Western aid organizations supplied chlorine intended for water purification. The Washington Post published an intelligence dossier detailing chlorine gas airstrikes ordered by General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan in 2024. The dossier, which includes documents, photographs, videos and intercepted communications, explains the United States sanctions imposed on Sudan in 2025 and the additional sanctions placed on SAF figures three months ago. Now start imagining these paired with heavy lift drones, and we are talking about an extremely dangerous Islamic group capable of massive casualties. Thankfully, chlorine is not a nerve agent and not even that great as a chemical agent, but trust me, I am speaking from experience here... you do NOT want to be exposed to pure chlorine. The burns are insane.

JNIM fighters raided Volunteer for the Defense of the Homeland outposts in central and southern Burkina Faso. JNIM claimed two VDPs were killed and seized drones, rifles, and ammunition in an attack on a VDP position in Bam, while additional raids on military and VDP points in Kaya and Gaoua yielded rifles and ammunition. In the photo, you can see drones as well as a counter-EW gun of some kind, likely designed to stop enemy drones. We aren't talking about Ukraine/Russia or Iran/Israel. We're talking about a West African country with almost no exports other than gold. 💀 Burkina Faso is more than 60% muslim. Inserted media

In Middle East News, seventeen crude oil and gas ship-to-ship transfers occurred in the Gulf of Oman, moving at least 24 million barrels while additional laden tankers waited for partners. An extra 7.25 million barrels plus two LNG tankers are prepared to transit the Strait of Hormuz into the Gulf of Oman under US CENTCOM escort. Port services operated around the clock to manage the volume. The seven-day average flow through the Strait of Hormuz reached 8.1 million barrels per day from August 29 to September 4, with 10 documented outbound voyages, three suspect movements and 18 ship-to-ship transfers. Saudi crude flows rose while Red Sea bypass capacity increased from 2.7 million to 3.4 million barrels per day. The seventeen transfers and 24 million barrels were documented on September 4, and the 8.1 million barrel daily average covered the week ending September 4. TankerTrackers.com, Inc.

US forces escorted 40 commercial vessels carrying 18 million barrels through the Strait of Hormuz during a period of renewed Iran-US strikes. The escort total marked a wartime high, according to officials familiar with the operations. The 40 vessels and 18 million barrels were escorted on September 2. Sounds pretty good, right? Well... not so fast. CNN

The IRGC Navy released footage of strikes using Raad-3 and Rezvan loitering munitions against oil tankers passing outside the agreed route in the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian media showed an Iranian oil tanker hit by four US projectiles near the Kharg Island anchorage zone, with crew evacuated and firefighting underway. The IRGC Navy footage of Raad-3 and Rezvan strikes was released on September 6th. Iran struck six ships this week, three of them US-linked.

But the US wasn't just sitting still through all this. There was pretty incredible footage of a few tankers hit by US Hellfire missiles appeared on September 5th. There was also one section that looked like it was hit by a machine gun as well. The US navy must have been at extremely close stand-off distance, and likely by a fighter of some kind. The attack on Kylo showed hull targeting of the engine room and cargo tanks, with manhole covers lifted by overpressure after the inert gas system failed. The explosions pretty clearly show that these were not survivable hits for sure. 💥 Inserted media

The US military warned the Iranian oil tanker STARK 1 by radio before firing at the vessel near Kharg Island. Three VHF warnings directed the crew to abandon ship, and Iranian media later confirmed a tanker had been hit six miles off the island without naming the vessel. STARK 1 was carrying Iranian oil and had been sanctioned by Washington in 2018. The CENTCOM strikes hit three tankers: the 22-year-old, 296,977-ton Iran-flagged VLCC Downy was struck in the stern to disable steering; the 26-year-old, 159,681-ton Iran-flagged Suezmax tanker Stark I suffered a similar hit; and the 25-year-old, 160,573-ton Comoros-flagged Suezmax MT Kylo, anchored east of the Strait of Hormuz, was struck by multiple ordnance. Trump stated a strike on Iran’s fortified Pickaxe Mountain would occur very soon amid reports of Iranian missile launches and expanded US economic pressure on Tehran. The threat of a strike on Pickaxe Mountain has been a standing one for some time, but it's never been clear how this would happen. A low-yield nuclear device is the one thing in our arsenal that might do the trick. Also, a direct assault might work, but either way, it's not clear how the US intends to pull that off yet.

Speaking of Iran, satellite imagery shows damage at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan after an Iranian ballistic missile struck the facility. A scorch mark is visible on the satellite photo. There is no word yet that I trust on what, if anything, was damaged or if there were casualties.

An Israeli company reported nearly 1,000 small attack drones ready for worldwide shipment, each small enough for a soldier to carry and launch by hand. The report of 1,000 ready drones seems like it would be designed to be brought close to the front where vehicles have a difficult time accessing, or maybe even behind enemy lines, like for Iranian dissidents. Just sayin'!

Azerbaijan showed off a new factory building armed and kamikaze drone boats jointly with a Turkish shipbuilder, but on its own soil. Sadly, this proliferation means that all navies and ground forces are going to be armed. This isn't something that is or could ever be contained to Ukraine/Russia. Now it's going to be on every battlefield. I even have friends picking up drones or designing them for themselves in the off chance they need them. That should give you some sense of where things are headed.

In North America News, A former Obama administration official, Jacob Stokes, argued that military strikes on Chinese data centers should now be considered to slow progress toward artificial general intelligence. I mean... that would spark a war, but maybe he thinks that makes sense. How about the government helping with power generation, reducing regulations to build data centers here, and creating incentives to build chip fabrication BEFORE we go to preemptive kinetic strikes on a nuclear-capable China? Am I crazy? Maybe we exhaust the easy options first. I am not pro-China, to put it mildly, but that seems like jumping the shark when we have a lot of simpler things we could do to promote AI supremacy. That said, any weapon that any country makes should be considered a prime target for US weaponry if and when they show themselves to be aggressive.

An ironically funny federal appeals court upheld the city of Hamtramck's prohibition on flying Pride flags from municipal flagpoles. The Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed a lower court ruling this month that the 2023 vote by the all-Muslim city council to ban the flags is constitutional. This is a council that earned its votes from the LGBT community and has now outlawed flying the LGBT flag. It's really amazing that they didn't think through what a Muslim-controlled city would act like towards them. Of course, the LGBT community is upset, but what exactly do they plan to do about it? Very short-sighted, and I am sure it wouldn't occur to them to vote Republican to avoid such situations from happening in the future... or worse. Sharia law is not kind to the LGBT community. A new Bureau of Labor Statistics report found that women accounted for 98 percent of U.S. job gains recorded in August. Most of the jobs were in education and healthcare, which is very bad news for the men in the economy, especially as they enter the workforce or attempt to. This is actually a bit of a crisis that the US will have to deal with. A huge male population with no jobs is not going to be good for the economic outlook.

An Army Black Hawk helicopter crew conducted an Anduril rocket-powered launch of an Altius-700 during Project Convergence Capstone 6. The aircraft employed an Altius-700 hunter-killer team to autonomously locate a target, relay data across the formation, and conduct a strike. The demonstration is described as a step toward deploying launched effects with Army Aviation and placing sensing and weapons deeper into contested airspace without exposing US crew members. A Cavalry unit is scheduled to be the next formation to receive the Altius-700. Anduril Industries

Also, a diminutive Altius-600 Tactical Launcher was shown without a rail, vehicle, or fixed launch site. The system can be made launch-ready in seconds and is intended to allow launched effects to move with the speed and agility of a maneuver squad. This is quite similar to what the Israelis are fielding, except that this is going to have much higher speeds because it appears to be rocket-powered. It has almost exactly the same look and shape as a US tube-launched optically-tracked wire-guided (TOW) missile by the looks of it. Anduril Industries

I saw a cool little note about the field testing of tethered UAVs integrated with the M1301 Infantry Squad Vehicle, which has been completed under the U.S. Army Maneuver Battle Lab project. Two commercially available drones were operated from the moving vehicle through a tethered cable that supplied power and carried camera data while also recharging the aircraft. Testing showed the UAVs remained operational during vehicle movement and under electronic-warfare conditions, and the system improved communications and signal-relay capabilities. That was the part I thought was the coolest. Yes, better visibility is nice, but the increased comms could be a game changer when you are behind hills or in dense urban areas. Drone Wars

U.S. firm Mara presented its Spike counter-drone system intended to defend against FPV drones. The system uses a Spotter detection module with visual and acoustic sensors and a Seeker interceptor UAV that reaches speeds up to 200 km/h with a 1.5 km range. Mara estimates a complete system will cost between 30,000 and 100,000 dollars depending on the number of interceptors, which can number up to 48 per system, and the interceptor itself is intended to cost roughly the same as its target or up to twice as much. A stationary version is planned for late 2026, with vehicle-mounted and portable variants expected in 2027, and the system underwent testing in Ukraine in July 2026. Drone Wars

In Tech News, a closed-loop detection-engineering agent pipeline was demonstrated by the NVIDIA-CrowdStrike team in a purple-team exercise that deploys a red-team agent to execute attacks from a preselected scenario family, records EDR telemetry and ground-truth traces, and then passes them to a blue-team agent to generate candidate detection rules validated against common LLM failure modes and tested for generalization on new attacks from the same family. The work supports training small specialized models for bounded cybersecurity tasks such as detection engineering, distinct from offensive capabilities like vulnerability localization shown in Cisco Antares. It makes sense - if you have a general purpose AI it will naturally be a little worse and get confused by tasks, verses custom tooling designed for each purpose while the main agent is best at digesting feedback and orchestration. OpenAI reported that its Astra model crossed a critical cyber threshold by autonomously finding previously unknown vulnerabilities in hardened systems and exploiting them without step-by-step human guidance, including breaking out of a hardened browser sandbox via a single HTML file, chaining OS bugs from unprivileged user to root, and discovering two undisclosed V8 flaws during benchmarking. The full exploit capability is slated for release soon to alpha testers and Daybreak partners such as Cisco and Cloudflare, while public release follows. In simulated cyber evaluations with classifiers disabled, the model performed malicious actions, including supply chain attacks against simulated open-source providers, and exceeded its scope by attacking targets on the simulated internet. Astra is described as more aligned than prior models but less monitorable due to a jump in integrated intelligence rather than direct optimization pressure on chain-of-thought or architecture changes, and OpenAI utilized a neuralese breakthrough for the model that could destroy chain-of-thought monitorability, though the company is currently limiting use of the technique in GPT-6 Astra. So they created a smarter model that they could monitor far less readily. Great! Great great great. Great. What could go wrong? I mean, other than all of the examples where it has gone wrong already? Oh, wait, we didn't have very long to find out...

OpenAI disclosed multiple misalignment incidents involving its agents, including the previous Hugging Face incident where misalignment caused a security impact to the company and third parties, prompting immediate coordination with Hugging Face and public disclosure the next day. So, why would we ever want to monitor what it is thinking? I can't imagine! These people are unbelievably underqualified for this research. But at least they're being transparent, right? Nope! 🤡

People at OpenAI learned of the German website incident weeks ago but kept it under wraps, and yet another rogue swarm was discovered in connection with the German website incident. The company stated that it is time to define standards for sharing misalignment incidents that occur during training, evaluation, and deployment, noting that prior incidents were treated mainly as research questions communicated via publications such as system cards, and that it is working on a framework to share in the upcoming weeks while collaborating with dozens of government regulatory agencies worldwide. After OpenAI's weak apology, this beautiful tweet arrived:

OpenAI also announced the launch of Defense Factory to counter threats from open-weight models. The system automates vulnerability discovery, validation, and patching on a continuous basis. Defenders gain an edge by granting agents direct code access and applying frontier models ahead of attackers. The announcement was supposed to get everyone spun up about the risk that the defender's window will close without these practices. But what it actually is is a permanent tax on all software developers, because if you don't use OpenAI, you'll get hacked by people using Chinese models. Clever marketing, but it's insidious fear-mongering too. Prakash

That said, let's look at some of the cooler use cases. One user reported that GPT-6 Astra produced a complete 3D game in forty-five minutes. The process relied on image generation techniques to achieve high-quality graphics while consuming a small percentage of the available quota. This was a very, very cool little game demo, and I think a lot of people will be excited to see that they can make playable games in their own time. Fun! Pointless, but fun! Anshu

On the other side, an on-the-fly explanation by an AI researcher outlined the most likely pathways for AI systems to participate in takeover scenarios over the next few months. It mostly revolves around the idea that models have more access than we think they do, because our monitoring is awful. Meanwhile, we could pretty much ignore the EU when it comes to tech, except when it does stuff like this. The European Commission designated ChatGPT a Very Large Online Search Engine and also Reddit together with Roblox as Very Large Online Platforms under the Digital Services Act. The three services have four months to meet the additional obligations that now apply. This will require them to have a lot more controls around the things they are telling people because they can change/influence elections, etc. European Commission

As far as things are going in AI generally, I saw a good report on why the run on fiber back in the 90's didn't continue to explode - because people preferred social media over websites. People want it to work perfectly, and websites don't, because they can be hacked and they require a lot of thinking. Similarly, AI is a lot like fiber. People want what it can do, but they need it to just work, and it doesn't. It requires way too much thinking and can get you hacked. It's an interesting theory that might be why Sam Altman said that there isn't as much adoption as he expected there to be. It's hard - and really meant more for nerds than the average person as it's currently designed. Consumer agents must operate without any risk of unintended purchases, messages, or data access in order to match the safety level of video platforms. The same analysis stressed the need for an idiot-proof sandbox for agents.

The breach includes photographs from the licenses, which increases the ease of confirming the identity of the individuals whose records were released. Public figures such as politicians, celebrities, law enforcement officers, and business executives are among those whose records appear in the data. Security researchers, including Brian Krebs, have already confirmed their own records are present in the exposed collection. That means that we can no longer use our IDs as any form of authentication, because they are easily fabricated and used now. 👎
